Bermad Valve Orientation Redesign.

Bermad Valve Orientation Redesign.

By David Thomas 30/03/2026

An end user was experiencing ongoing difficulty when servicing a heavy, unbalanced Bermad valve, where its mass and geometry made controlled rotation challenging and increased both manual handling effort and service time. When dealing with equipment of this nature, the biggest challenge is control; forcing alignment manually is inefficient and increases safety risks. In its original configuration, the valve was supported on a pivot point that worked against gravity, with the centre of mass creating an unbalanced moment. This meant gravity resisted movement toward the required service position, forcing operators to apply significant effort to rotate and hold the valve while also making fine adjustments difficult and increasing safety risks.

The simplest and most effective solution in such cases is to work with physics, not against it. Techmine addressed this issue by redesigning the assembly and relocating the pivot point to better align with the valve’s centre of mass. By doing so, gravity was used to our advantage, allowing the valve to naturally move toward the required service orientation instead of resisting it. The result is smooth, controlled, and predictable movement, enabling more precise positioning while significantly reducing the effort required by operators.

This redesign has improved overall serviceability and ergonomics, reduced manual handling risks, and enabled faster and more efficient maintenance. It demonstrates Techmine’s ability to apply practical mechanical engineering principles to deliver effective, site-specific solutions for heavy and unbalanced equipment—serving as a reminder that sometimes the best engineering solutions come from letting nature do the work.
